Saint Francis Explores Shared Ministry

At the vestry retreat on Feb. 24, Pastor Marcia and vestry members met with the Rev. Delia Fay, diocesan facilitator of Shared Ministry, to discuss shared ministry and the discernment process that congregations undergo to determine if shared ministry is the right model for them.

Shared ministry emphasizes a ministering community of Christians, rather than a Christian community gathered around and dependent upon a minister. The discernment process helps congregations such as ours determine our unique missions and how to equip each other to do God’s work. In this way, shared ministry will help each of us fulfill our baptismal covenant to be ministers for Christ.

We invite all of you to join in this church-wide discernment process. The first big step, which takes 18 months, is to decide whether we want to engage in shared ministry. If we agree to proceed, then we will work to determine our individual gifts and how they can serve Saint Francis and the community.

This doesn’t mean we stop doing the ministry we’re doing right now, or that we have to wait until next year to discern God’s purpose for us. But it gives us an intentional path for a deeper, community-wide commitment and involvement.
